Organic food in Portland Maine on the Atlantic (gluten-free, too!)
As soon as we walked into Flatbread Company, I knew it was our kind of place. We were greeted by a wood-fire over, oceanfront patio and a list of local farmers they source from. The atmosphere is one in a million and you can’t beat the view. So, I’d say it’s time for you to plan your next trip and make sure you stop by Portland, Maine. Check out Vinland, too!
Organic House Salad with olives, mushrooms and smoked salmon (lox style). This delicious salad is perfect as a meal for one or an appetizer for two. It comes with a serving of local goat cheese and their house made dressing that’s gluten-free and vegan.
This Blueberry Salad is a must when you stop into the Flatbread Company. The sweet and tangy Maine blueberries paired with a local goat cheese and arugula make the perfect combo.
Delicious Flatbreads (gluten-free, too!)
Punctuated Equilibrium – Pizza fans, you have to try this one. The locally made gluten-free crust is amazing and you cannot even tell it is gluten-free. It’s topped with fire-roasted tomatoes, olives, local goat cheese, spinach, red peppers, onions and seasonings. It’s basically a garden on a flatbread, it’s glorious.
Jimmy’s Free-Range Chicken – Think taco but on a flatbread. This unique combo is simple yet packed with flavor. The combo of corn, beans, chicken and lime creme might explain the Mexican flare I mentioned above. We recommend you have it with a side of marinara!
Custom Pizza – Tommy ate this one.. took one for the team because it’s on their house crust (gluten). He ate almost the whole thing so, I’d say he loved it. It has the delicious wood-fire oven taste with a crispy crust and thin base. This is simple cheese pizza with caramelized onions and spinach!
Whoopie Pie (GF & V) – If you’ve never had a whoopie pie (like me) you won’t really know what to expect.. let me explain. The outsides are a well-baked crispy but fluffy cake texture. Then, there is a filling on the inside. Think ice cream sandwich, without the ice cream but filling instead! This delicious gluten-free and vegan dessert is a perfectly sweetened not overwhelming. It’s coupled with house made whipped cream and local ice cream, I devoured it.
Brownie Sundae (can be GF) – Where are my corner of the brownie fans?! This decadent and rich brownie has the crispy corner piece outside and an ooey gooey inside. It, too, is served with whipped cream and ice cream. Best of all, it’s topped with their house made chocolate sauce that mellows out the sweetness of the brownie.
Apple Crisp (made with seasonal fruit) – In our case, we got to try the peach blueberry crisp because that’s what’s in season in Maine in August! Again, Tommy took one for the team and indulged in this one. It’s made with local fruit, a thin crust and a crumble topping. They serve it up with ice cream and whipped cream as well. The cool thing about their whipped cream is that it’s sweetened with local maple syrup, yum!
What they’re all about
The staff and management at this organic restaurant in Portland Maine stick to their guns when it comes to sourcing and sustainability. Their menu is made up of mostly organic items from local farms. Uniquely, several of their menu items are from ex or current employees that started their own businesses while working at Flatbread Company; like Maine Root!
Inside you will find a massive list of local farmers they support + so many more that aren’t even listed!
On top of that, they have a dog friendly patio. Gilligan had three other friends out there so, grab the leash and bring your furry friend!
